Headmistress Letter

Twenty years ago, I founded Discovery Academy with a single purpose: to give students the tools to succeed—not just in school, but in everything that comes after.

As a researcher, I spent nearly two decades at the University of Toronto studying how the physical world works at its smallest scale. But my deepest passion has always been teaching. For over 40 years, across three countries and three universities, I’ve watched students struggle and I’ve watched them thrive—and I’ve learned that the difference almost always comes down to one thing: whether someone took the time to find the gap in their understanding and help them close it.

That’s what we do at Discovery Academy.

When a child struggles, we don’t assume they can’t learn—we assume they’re missing a piece. Maybe it’s a concept from last year. Maybe it’s a fundamental skill that was never fully built. We go back, we find it, and we put it in place. And when that piece clicks—when a student’s face lights up with genuine understanding—that is why I do this work. I personally develop the education materials we use at this school. Hundreds of booklets, designed so that every student can follow their own path at their own pace. No two children learn the same way, and our program reflects that.

But what truly makes Discovery Academy special isn’t the materials—it’s the people. Our teachers are mentors. Our older students look after our younger ones. We are, in every sense, a family. And families don’t give up on each other.

I invite you to come see us. Walk through our classrooms. Talk to our students. You’ll feel the difference the moment you step through the door.
